Buon compleanno, Carlo Coccia

Novara, Teatro Carlo Coccia.
(Wikipedia)

(Lei nacque a Lynn,  Massachusetts, a genitori castellammaresi.)

Buon 232º compleanno, Carlo Coccia!
I admit that, until today, I did not know who Carlo Coccia was.  I knew only the opera house in the beautiful northern Italian city of Novara, which is called the Teatro Carlo Coccia.

To see this theater in person in 2008 was a special thing for me.  In the 1990s I was the accompanist and assistant of Iride Pilla (1904-1997), important soprano and voice professor at the Boston Conservatory.  (She was born in Lynn, MA, to parents from Castellammare di Stabia.)  Madame Pilla told me many times the story of when, in 1927, she sang Andrea Chénier in the presence of the composer. After the performance there was an opulent dinner.  But Pilla could not eat any of it.  Under the table, Giordano was holding one of her hands, and the Mayor of Novara was holding the other!

Today is the birthday of Carlo Coccia, who — I learned today — was a Neapolitan composer. He wrote dozens of operas and many sacred pieces.

Happy 232rd Birthday, Carlo Coccia!
