Cari melomani, Mi sento un po' malinconico stasera. Sono passati esattamente cento anni da quando il Grande Enrico Caruso registrò il suo ultimo disco, il "Crucifixus" della Petite Messe Solennelle di Rossini. Sono davvero passati 100 anni da quando si catturarono gli ultimi toni da quella gola dorata? È scivolato via così tanto tempo? Sono state scritte tante cose sul più grande cantante della storia. Ma c'è ancora molto di più da dire! Caruso era un eroe per gli immigrati italo-americani durante gli anni di Ellis Island. Oggi è ancora un eroe per ogni conoscitore del bel canto. Oggigiorno sei famoso perché un manager dice che tu sia grande. Caruso era famoso perché TUTTI dicevano che era grande.  Non c'è dubbio che questi ultimi 100 anni siano stati più poveri dei 100 anni che precedettero. Un mondo in cui un orecchio potesse udire tali suoni era un mondo superiore al nostro.

Dear music-lovers, I am feeling a little wistful this evening. It is exactly one hundred years since the Great Enrico Caruso recorded his very last record, the "Crucifixus" from Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle. It is really 100 years since the last tones from that golden throat were ever captured? Has that much time slipped away? So much has been written about history's greatest singer. But there is still so much more to be said! Caruso was a hero to the Italian-American immigrants during the Ellis Island years. Today he is still a hero to every connoisseur of fine singing. Nowadays you are famous because a manager says you are great. Caruso was famous because EVERYONE said he was great. There is no question that these last 100 years were poorer than the 100 years that preceded. A world in which an ear could hear such sounds was a better world than ours.
