Enrico Caruso: His Songs

Il 150° anniversario della nascita del più grande cantante che sia mai esistito, ENRICO CARUSO, si avvicina velocemente. In quanto italoamericano, i cui antenati arrivarono in America durante gli anni di Ellis Island, il nome “Caruso” era abbastanza vicino al nome “Dio.” Da musicista professionista che (senza falsa modestia) ha decenni di esperienza nel campo della musica vocale, posso confermare che il canto di Caruso non è mai stato superato (opinione condivisa da tutti i grandi cantanti e da tutti i grandi critici del canto) . Pertanto, per questi due motivi, provo una “doppia devozione” per questo grande artista, le cui antiche incisioni continuano ad essere studiate e godute. In questo nostro mondo la ciarlataneria è sempre esistita e sempre esisterà. I social media consentono l’emergere anche dei “musicisti” e dei “ricercatori” più insignificanti che si proclamano con coraggio “carusiani.” In mezzo a loro, tuttavia, c’è un cantante di fama internazionale, che, anche se non avesse mai visitato una biblioteca, sarebbe già rispettato per le sue numerose grandi esibizioni sui grandi palcoscenici operistici del mondo, molte delle quali sono prontamente disponibili su YouTube. Comunque quest’uomo ha sicuramente visitato alcune biblioteche! Grazie all’incredibile dedizione e caparbietà di quest’uomo così onesto e laborioso, un intero repertorio di canzoni composte da Caruso e per Caruso è stato riesumato dagli archivi di varie biblioteche del mondo e raccolto, prima in un album di spartiti, poi in un notevole set di due CD. C’era molta emozione, e molto nervosismo, all’idea che questo set di CD – registrato nella villa di Caruso – sarebbe uscito in tempo per il compleanno speciale. È davvero disponibile. Infatti ne ho ricevuto la mia copia nella posta di ieri. Il nome di questo carusiano – e merita davvero il soprannome – è Mark Milhofer. Il nome dell’album è Enrico Caruso: His Songs (pubblicato da Urania Records). Non c’è dubbio che questa sia la pubblicazione legata a Caruso più significativa, musicalmente e musicologicamente, pubblicata durante questo anniversario. Solo qualcuno che ama Caruso così profondamente e così onestamente avrebbe potuto realizzare qualcosa di così straordinario. Ogni canzone è stata studiata e interpretata in modo impeccabile. Milhofer è un vero tenore con una vera carriera internazionale. Ma è anche un tenore intelligente; sa che il suo strumento è molto diverso da quello di Caruso. Canta con la propria voce e non tenta mai di imitare Caruso, o chiunque altro. L’accompagnamento del brillante partner pianistico di Milhofer, Marco Scolastra, è al di là di ogni rimprovero. La sua esecuzione sicura e sensibile è eccezionale sotto ogni aspetto. Naturalmente, è impossibile dimenticare che questi dischi sono stati registrati nella casa di Caruso, l’imponente villa (ora museo) a Lastra a Signa, una delle città collinari più belle della provincia di Firenze. Nessuna spesa è stata risparmiata nel libretto che accompagna il CD, ricco di foto e informazioni biografiche su tutti i compositori. The 150th anniversary of the birth of the greatest singer who ever lived, ENRICO CARUSO, fast approaches. As an Italian-American, whose ancestors came to America during the Ellis Island Years, the name "Caruso" was pretty close to the name "God." As a professional musician who (without false modesty) has decades of experience in the field of vocal music, I can corroborate that Caruso's singing has never been surpassed (an opinion held by all of the great singers and all of the great critics of singing). Therefore, for these two reasons, I feel a "double devotion" to this great artist, whose ancient recordings continue to be both studied and enjoyed. In this world of ours, charlatanism has always existed and will always exist. Social media allows the emergence of even the most insignicant "musicians" and "researchers" who boldly proclaim themselves "Carusians." Amidst them, however, is a vocalist of international repute, who, even if he never visited a library, would already be respected for his many great performances on the great opera stages of the world, many of which are readily available on YouTube. However, this man certain did visit a few libraries. Thanks to the incredible dedication and doggedness of this very honest and hard-working man, an entire repertoire of songs composed by Caruso and for Caruso have been exhumed from the archives of various libraries around the world and collected, first into an album of sheet music, and then into a remarkable two-CD set. There was a lot of excitement, and a lot of nervousness, that this CD set – recorded in Caruso's own villa – would be released in time for the special birthday. It is indeed available. In fact I received my copy in yesterday's mail. The name of this Carusian – and he really DOES deserve the moniker – is Mark Milhofer. The name of the album is Enrico Caruso: His Songs (released by Urania Records). There is no question that this is the most significant Carusian publication, musically and musicologically, to appear during this anniversary year. Only someone who loves Caruso so deeply and so honestly could have achieved something so remarkable. Each song was researched and interpreted impeccably. Milhofer is a real tenor with a real international career. But he is also a smart tenor; he knows that his instrument is very different from Caruso's. He sings with his own voice and never attempts to imitate Caruso, or anyone else. The accompaniment of Milhofer's brilliant pianistic partner, Marco Scolastra, is beyond any reproach. His assured and sensitive execution is exceptional in every respect. Naturally, it's impossible to forget that these discs were recorded in Caruso's own home – the imposing villa (now museum) in Lastra a Signa, one of the most breaktakingly beautiful hilltop towns in the province of Florence. No expense was spared in the booklet which accompanies the CD, filled with photos and biographical information about all the composers.
