That's the strange thing. I don't know how the supermarkets are making money on it. But I'm not complaining! To answer your question: yes, it still "tastes like a balsamic." But for salads, the color itself is enough reason to avoid the regular balsamic. I just adore these "white" salads with white grapes, white balsamic, pistachios (almonds, whatever you like), and of course you can also put a wonderful cheese on top like pecorino, gorgonzola, whatever you like. As for these flavored balsamics, naturally a little goes a long way. But I find the orange flavor is perfect for a salad -- after all, with what meal does citrus NOT go?
